Assembly & Archive
Max Smoot
James O’Keefe
July 1 to August 28, 2009
Opening reception: Saturday, July 18, 2 to 4 p.m.
Assembly & Archive is an interactive look at the worth and beauty of post-consumer objects. James O’Keefe uses humor in his carefully crafted, alternative worlds to pose questions about waste and materiality. By thoughtfully amassing objects into portable “museums,” O’Keefe invites audiences to redefine the lines between art and participation, the useful and the absurd.
Max Smoot questions the logic of contemporary consumer-based society by using resources in the street to assemble works of art. His work suggests a universal solution to the problem of waste by reconsidering what we deem valuable and how we deal with objects we no
longer want or need.
