BRING Gallery proudly presents the mixed media fiber art of Babette Grunwald. The exhibition opens on January 14th and will run through February 29th. The public is invited to attend a reception on January 19th from 2 pm until 4 pm.
Grunwald's work is colorful, intricate and unique. She creates vibrantly layered works that critically address the delicate relationship between humans and the ecosystems we depend on for survival. "The hurt, maltreated and scared cloth is a metaphor for permanent damage humanity has inflicted on nature."
As an artist, Grunwald (who holds advanced degrees in art, science and education), feels a responsibility to encourage people to critically question their actions within society and their relationship to the environment. "My larger goal is to show that balance is fragile, that we are members of the ecosystems that we inhabit, and that life is interdependent."
"I use many recycled materials for my work to minimize my personal impact on our planet: old sheets; waste yarn from projects in the weaving studio; fabric and thread from second-hand stores and mill-end stores that sell bolts of fabric that wouldn't sell otherwise." Her unique techniques include layering, fusing, tearing, sewing and burning a wide variety of materials, creating rich surfaces and textures that suggest disturbing histories and examine the concept of interconnectedness.
Grunwald creates her art in Philomath, OR where she lives and has a studio. She recently received an MFA in Fibers from the University of Oregon. She in is an internationally recognized artist and has been awarded numerous honors for her art. She has exhibited her work regionally, throughout United States, and in Europe.
