Many Hands Make Light Work

BRING encourages the teamwork of employees and volunteers so that we can offer the community the best services possible. Volunteers contribute unique talents, skills and knowledge, provide personalized attention, enable salaried staff to concentrate on the work for which they were trained, and educate the public about BRING’s mission.

Volunteer (fun!) Opportunities
Call Michele at 606-9093 to volunteer.

Reuse Recipe Contest
Show off your creativity! Win BRING Bucks! Submit a photo of a project completed using BRING recycled materials along with a description detailing the “RECIPE” on an index card. Include your name, email, address and phone number on the back of the photo and description and give to a BRING cashier by the 25th of each month. Projects will be posted and winners will receive BRING BUCKS, FAME and GLORY!

Calling All Inventors!
BRING Recycling Volunteers are calling for reuse inventors to join in the RUBE GOLDBERG JAMBOREE—a showcase for the wackiest, crazyist inventions our reuse artisans can create. Let your creative juices flow. Solve problems ranging from what to do with an old toilet to how to transform PVC pipe into the latest fashion accessory. Call Larry for information at 541-689-1630.

Eugene Celebration Parade
Would you like to join BRING volunteers in the Eugene Celebration Parade? We will make instruments from warehouse items and celebrate as a BRING marching band. Please call the volunteer coordinator at 606-9093 to participate!

BRING Recycling loves volunteers.  Whether it is organizing shelves, painting, landscaping, acting as ambassador, helping with BRINGfest, working on special projects like the living roof, or instigating new projects, there is a place for you at BRING. Volunteer groups and individuals are invited to call the Volunteer Coordinator at 606-9093 to see what opportunities are currently available.

Friends of BRING (FOB), a volunteer group, meets monthly for lunch (provided) and an update on projects and volunteer needs. Newcomers are always welcome to join the group and see how to become involved. Our needs vary—just come with a positive attitude and we’ll show you how you can get started with a great group of fun-loving, amazing individuals. Our next meeting is Wednesday, September 17, at 11 a.m.

When you come to Volunteer:
Always wear closed-toed shoes or work boots
• Wear grungy clothing…you will probably get dirty.
• Bring gloves if you have them. (We have some, but you might prefer your own.)
• Bring a water bottle (we have water but like recycled bottles)
• Dress for the weather (our warehouse is not heated or air conditioned)

When you get here:
•
Check in with the volunteer coordinator or the cashier.
• Make sure you have completed a volunteer form and liability waiver. (They are available in the cabinet on the door across from checkout or can be filled out online by clicking on the link below.
• Fill out a time sheet. (We need these for grant funding and to recognize your efforts.)
• Wear one of our cool volunteer pins to identify yourself.

SAFETY FIRST!  Know you are working around sharp objects and could be hurt. Always be careful with whatever you do and don’t take any chances on lifting, moving or working a project if there is a safety concern. Know your limitations.  Ask for help if you need it. Stay alert to your surroundings

RESOURCE LIBRARY
BRING Recycling invites the public to visit our resource library. We have numerous titles in stock that address green building, waste reduction and related topics. There are several books we would like to add to our library. Please see the list below and consider donating any of the following. If you have other books you’d like to give to the library, we gladly accept donations. Those we cannot use will be either returned to donor, sold at BRING or given to a worthy organization.

Since its inauguration at the beginning of summer, the BRING Resource Library has been attracting browsers to its nook at the north end of the PIC Gallery. The primary reasons? Inviting chairs, the kids’ table, tidbits of information on community happenings, and, of course, the assortment of books, periodicals and electronic media. Among our selection of books: Green Remodeling (author David Johnston), Planting Green Roofs & Living Walls (Dunnett, Kingsbury), Naturally Elegant Home (Janet Marinelli) and Passive Solar Design Handbook (Steven Baker). Magazines include Fine Homebuilding and Recycling Today. As before, please note that materials are not available for checkout; we keep plenty of paper on hand for taking notes.

Have you already been to the library, and would like to comment? Suggestions are welcome, as are book/magazine/you name it donations. Post your business card, or add an upcoming event to the main bulletin board. Your participation will help the library continue to improve.

• The latest library news: our list is online! Click here for the catalog and check our media selection before visiting in person

BOOK REVIEW
The Resourceful Renovator
by Jennifer Corson

The Resourceful Renovator is an easy-to-read book that is filled with useful facts, photos and information. The author uses six main building and construction materials (wood, metal, glass, stone, brick and ceramic) to serve as section topics. Each is offered with a short history, and information on how we come by this material, how we process it and how we use it. Finishing the sections are many ideas and illustrations showcasing re-use projects.

Anyone familiar with the BRING Planet Improvement Center will surely feel at home with this valuable addition to the BRING Resource Library. —Reviewed by Volunteer Rick Diggs
